If you’re new to hiking in the Uwharries, the very best information on the trails can be found in this wonderful guide by Uwharrie Trailblazer, Don Childrey:

You can order it and have it in a few days.

Until you get your copy of Don's book, though, try one of these options recommended by some of our other trail experts.  Take water and let folks know where you’re going.  Parking is available and generally safe at all trail heads.

Hikes

  1. Rt 109 Trailhead, either direction on the Uwharrie Trail a mile or more in and back out.  North to Cattail and Spencer Creeks or south to Watery Branch or Cedar Creek.

  2. Birkhead Wilderness, closer to Asheboro. Click here for a map from Don Childrey's book. There are three trail heads: Tot Hill,  Thornburg, and Robbins Branch.  Don’s book outlines several loops. There are out and back is an options, as well. You could ascend Coolers Knob from Tot Hill or walk to the Bingham Plantation site from Robbins Branch.  The Trailblazers are working on more trail opportunities in the area.

Trail maps are available here on the Uwharrie National Forest website:
